SunnO))) - Monoliths and Dimensions 2 LP

There something special about vinyl and while some releases on vinyl can be somewhat disappointing( i wont mention any names ) this new one from Sunn O))) seems to benefit from the needle in groove feel.One track per side gives the listening experience a bit more of a live feeling and the tracks themselves seem to benefit from having a break to get up and change sides.First of all the hugeness of this work is amazing,so much depth within each piece of music makes you wonder how they have so much music vision. "Agartha" launches with Sunn 0)))'s trademark room-filling downtuned minimalist approach.

The under - played orchestral touches have limited effect however but this continues the classic Sunn 0))) tradition of making the most of their sound.The noise literally surrounds around you."Big Church" is a different though as they some female chorus chanting rather than singing.This is a multi dimension piece of work and might just be the pick of the album."Hunting and Gathering" takes it the album on a slightly different path with a more orchestral mood.More complex with more detail,this is a monumental piece of work.Sixteen-minute-plus closing cut "Alice" brings everything full circle with all the elements that make this band so special in the world of Drone and Doom.On here they use English horns, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and there is even more sounds on display on this track.Putting this track together in particular must have been a gigantic task.

The guest list on here is huge starting with members from Earth and then there is a multitude of orchestral players.The verdict - well if you never liked Sunn 0))) in the past,this wont change your opinion but this can stand confidently along side any other of Sunn 0))) releases.If you are a fan of these leaders and innovators of Drone/Noise Rock,you will love this.9/10
