Coming out of Southwestern Siberia, Dozelimit formed in 2008 by guitarists Evgeny Vasiliev and Anton Artemiev. The droning sound-scapes they create with these 7 untitled tracks are a challenging listening experience and are certainly a acquired taste. I have to be honest here, after several plays of this disc i am still be totally un-convinced this is something i will continue to listen to although the album does have some great moments. If you love the sound of delay pedals, feedback, distortion, electronics and industrial sounds played with a gloomy atmosphere, then you will get something out of this. If you are looking for something more in the field of traditional Doom, you wont find it on this album. This album Constructions Of The Highest Architecture, released by Russian indie label RAIG, is an intriguing fusion of instrumental Ambient and Doom with industrial overtones.
Using not much more than a couple of guitars, minimal sound effects and the use of ambient electronic sounds, the band somehow creates a very layered sound. Traditional Doom Metal fans who lets be honest here are for the most part very conservative listeners won't be able to grab onto anything here and while fans of Sunn o))) are the most likely ones to appreciate the droning qualities of this release, even some of them may be a little confused by some of the sounds resonating from this disc. Tracks one through five basically follow the same format, bleak atmospheric metallic undertones with just a hint of droning melodies blend in with feedback and industrial noises. Sometimes you get minutes of noise and then all of a sudden its broken up with bird sound effects or a low-end bass will come crashing in unexpectedly. These moments are very dramatic as your mind tends to wander at times only to be shocked back into reality with these waves of sonic noise. At times it steers close towards more Psychedelic type of music than real ambiance but the overall vibe is one of a tight industrial machine churning out psychotic imagery through music.
Highlight of the disc comes in the form of track six, the level of menacing intensity is increased through some Doom laden down-tuned guitars backed up with industrial static noises. This is the closest they ever come to sounding like a typical Drone / Doom outfit as the final track heads back to the vibe of the earlier tracks. Listening to this is like having your brains sucked out by a vacuum only to have them shoved back in again by a mechanical meat-press. Its a painful, uncomfortable listening experience but its very unique and also very bleak and depressing at times. Hard to put a tag on this one and even harder to recommend this to a certain type of Doom listener as its very different even from a Drone / Ambient perspective. Check it out for yourself but i found this very hard to get a handle on. 5/10
