This is a 2010 demo sent to me by Mike Simpson who plays in a Toronto doom band called Godstopper. Mike played all the instruments on the Demo, which was recorded in Sept. 2010. Since then, the band has become a 4-piece. There is a certain mystery surrounding the band and I must admit I have always been intrigued by bands that keep a kind of mystique as it pushes my curiosity even further. Listening to these three tracks I get the feeling that this band are not your usual doom act and they don't want to be. The opening track on the demo, "Clean House" begins with echo-laden drums before going into a strange psychedelic guitar lick that displays a twisted kind of melodic ambience. There is a peculiarity to the guitar work on the track which is a bit hard to take at first, it is maybe too quirky and whimsical but once the tune gets into full swing, it is mesmerizing. The vocals are infectious and melodic and they display a classic-rock approach of giving the listener a wealth of hook-laden melody lines. It isn't what I would consider doom-metal, this is a psychedelic drugged-up oddity that sounds like nothing else. Maybe this a stretch, but I actually thought of the band, Ween and their "Pod" album as it has a progressive rock edge but played with a garage-rock sound. Despite the basic production, there is an underlying quality to these songs that makes the sound quality irrelevant.
"Dont Walk Home" is again dominated by guitar and an infectious vocal performance and it is just as weird in its kind of acid-rock format. It cleverly sits on the fence between experimentation and traditional songwriting so you are constantly wondering where the song will go next. The short 3 track demo is completed with a short instrumental titled "Saarento" which is a barren and ethereal piece evoking visions of a desolate wasteland. Taking into account the avant-garde approach, it is almost impossible to guess where their audience resides and don't ask me about influences as I would be only guessing as this really doesn't like anything I have heard this year. It is refreshing to hear a musician taking this approach and completely side-stepping the obvious so I recommend you listen to this............8.5/10 Godstopper Bandcamp Godstopper @ Tumblr
