Type O Negative - World Coming Down ...

Ultra heavy, ultra slow, ultra emotional and subsequently ultra Type-O-Negative are the only words capable to describe what is quiet possibly the best album from the drab four. This is the bands Doom masterwork as it contains the bands treasured hallmarks while pushing their boundaries to new extremes. The production is brilliant from start to finish. The guitar and bass tandem is nothing short of amazing. The guitars are heavy and thick, their melody's are soothing and soul crushing. Kenny really out did himself on this album as far as creating a sold Metal backbone for this plodding monster. There are plenty of anguished leads and even a few solos (though they are from a non-band member). Peter is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. His style of playing and attitude towards playing are nothing short of groundbreaking. His distorted sound finally makes sense on this release. He and Kenny play off each other flawlessly. Peter practically sounds like another guitarist while playing any part of any song switching effortlessly between clean and distorted passages. Slowly and painfully making you feel his horrific visions.

The keyboards are mournful and remind one of a cross between a funeral procession, an invocation and a 70's Metal. He is the atmosphere and the tension release from the stringed instruments. Johnny pounds out some of his more creative patterns on this album than on succeeding releases. Peter's voice is in fine form here as well. Furthering his foray into cleaner vocals he uses his full range on this album from start to finish. The lyrics are perhaps some of the bands bleakest yet. This album was created around the time of Peter’s father's death and his sorrow and pain can be heard in every note and every chord the band plays. If there were any complaints it would be the random samples of noise signifying how the band members will die, and the second to last song. The samples are pointless and filler material. The second to last song 'All Hallows Eve' simply doesn't fit this album; however Kenny does take a crack at singing the verses and isn’t half bad.

This is a very intense record, like the one prior this is as close to soul purging sonic therapy as you're ever going to get. This album will tear you up and leave you writhing in woe and misery while at the same time, lifting your spirit to see the worthless wretch you are. Unlike the bands prior release, this isn't art however. This is not a problem though because this album is in countless ways more than its predecessor. This is one of the best examples of American Doom Metal will ever find. This gets a 9.5/10

Ed's Note: This another one of those, are they really doom metal kind of bands? Personally I don't think so, what do you think readers?

  2. If ToN is doom? hahaha.
Great band anyway, a bit overrated though...
World Coming Down carries the shittiest production of a ToN album. This actually is not heavy at all you can hardly hear the guitar.
Maybe Bloody kisses should have been review first. Bloody Kisses is 10/10 for its kind and contains some songs that can be enjoyed by fans of all kinds of hard music.
    Cheers!

  4. I've had them tagged as gothic doom metal, but there's not much doomy stuff here, really (Changing tags as I write this).

  5. Seriously, Type O are NO doom band. What is doom about them? They are dark sounding but not heavy at all.

  6. World Coming Down was a disaster of a album. Maybe the worst album they ever did, terrible songs and woeful production. Don't really understand Grimdoom's 9.5/10, It deserves a 3 or 4 at best and I am a type o fan, just not a fan of this album. And also, they are not doom metal. Heavy goth-pop is a more fitting description. I wouldn't even fit them into the metal genre, their guitars never had any balls to them. Bloody Kisses was the best thing they ever did.

  7. Hmmm, I started something here ha ha. My little note wasn't meant to a criticism on this band by the way. I am not a fan and never have been but they were never a doom to me but I have spoken to many people over the years who think they are total doom. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Also, I do agree with the earlier comment that Bloody Kisses was their best album. I wish they had of made more albums like that one.

  8. World Coming Down was their best album! They are absolute Doom! No Goth here, they're way too slow, heavy and depressing to be goth.

  9. I think people call them doom because its convenient. They are dark sounding but I think sometimes people confused darkness with heaviness. If I had to put a tag on them it would be goth-doom but that is only because there is nothing else that fit as well as that.

  10. The key word here is overrrated, very average band and the vocals are terrible. I do like a few songs but not much else and I think this was their worst album.

  12. This band goes beyond genres (how about eerie atmospheric black comedy metal?)

Still one of my favorites together with the mighty Carnivore. Peter Steele = legendary

If You Can't Eat It or Fuck It... Then Kill It!

  14. I like their music but sorry I can't stand Steele. His voice sounds like someone farting down a toilet bowl to me and his lyrics are absolute garbage. Good music though and yeah, they are not doom metal but I don't what genre they are. Maybe doom lounge music or something lol.

  15. Wat? They are NOT doom metal - period, heavy yes but NOT DOOM.

  16. This is their best album. Best production. Slowest. Heaviest. Etc... How is this band not Doom? There is nothing Gothic about them. Keyboards, deep vocals and sad songs don't make someone "Goth". If that were the case, Dream Theater, Nevermore and Trouble would all be "Gothic". The songs are as described: Slow, heavy and depressing. That is the recipe for Doom. The gothic tag is the most liberally thrown around tag in Heavy Metal and it strangely blankets many bands that don't fall under its definitions. If you want to hear Gothic Metal/Rock check out: Sentenced, Amorphis, Entwine, Serinia, etc... TON sound nothing like the aforementioned. If you listen to their music you'll here Black Sabbath not Sister of Mercy. Apparently you don't know much about Heavy Metal.

  17. You obviously didn't grow up with metal when I did. This is heavy goth-hard rock, end of story.

  18. This pops up again on the recent comment thingmajig. *sigh*

Type O is a mixed genre, hybrid band if you like. One of the genres they use is goth, I am sorry but you can't hear that in the music, hear it in lyrics and see it in artwork and photos, you are not living on the same planet as everybody else. They are NOT a pure goth band but they are FAR from doom-metal too. You are not going to tell me songs like Black, Christian Woman, Everything Dies, Dead Again and I could go on and on are doom-metal are you. They are barely metal let alone doom.

  19. Damn I can see this topic is not going to die. Do I need to make a poll on this? I hear and see goth in type o but I hear a lot of other stuff too. That is all I am going to say, I am keeping out of this one lol.
