Generation Void was/is Iron Man’s third album that was originally was released in 1999 on Brainticket Records. Shadow Kingdomhave already re-released the first two albums by this classic doom band from Maryland and now have finally done the same with 'Generation Void.' Along with the original release, there are four extra tracks added but the real killer is the bonus DVD of Iron Man playing live at Phantasmagoria in Wheaton, Maryland. The packaging is excellent and it is selling for a fair price too so no fan can afford to miss out on this. I have no idea how long this DVD included package will last so I would jump on it fast if I was you. Originally released in 1999, the album was weak by Iron Man standards but with the inclusion of the DVD and bonus tracks, it kind of seals the deal for this re-release.
Without a doubt 'Generation Void' was one of the bands most Black Sabbath inspired moments. The guitar tone of Alfred Morris III is straight from 'Master of Reality' Sabbath and they even take the Sabbath worship one step further by using the same kind of simple bone-charring demonic riffage that Tony Iommi made famous with songs like Into The Void and Sweet Leaf.' As an album, this recording is start to finish bluesy doom metal and total old school. There was never any bad tracks on 'Generation Void' but it doesn't have any out-and-out mind blowers either. Perhaps the best tracks here are 'As the Gods Have Spoken,' 'King of Kings,' and the album opening 'On The Mountain.' These tracks have a bit more spark than what is on the rest of the album which is still all good by the way but compared to other works from the band, sounds a little flat. The bonus tracks are interesting and a very worthwhile inclusion to the package. There is what I think is a rehearsal version of the album's title track that blows away the version that eventually wound up on the original release and that and that alone makes this worth sitting through to the very end. With the extra tracks, the CD has a playing time of 62 plus minutes but then you have the DVD and that is where the real interest his, at least it was for me till I saw it.
Now from the outset, I must warn you, this is fan-filmed footage so the quality is average at best and the filming is strictly amateur. The performance itself is of a very stiff band, lacking energy but still delivering a tight live show. It is the full show too, not just a few chosen tracks so this CD/DVD package gives you real value for money. The band rip through classic track after classic track and while the band appear to be a little bored at times, their playing is perfect throughout the set. While the visuals are lacking, the sound is decent but you need to crank it up to get the most out of the recording. 'Shadow Kingdom Records' needs to be congratulated for putting this out and making such a beautiful package that is worth every dime. It is far from the bands best work but when you put the album + bonus tracks + DVD together, hell, this is a no brainer, it is essential for fans of Iron Man and anyone wanting to experience one of Maryland's finest bands in action..........8/10.
