Ides Of Gemini – The Disruption Writ ...

Here is a very nice psychedelic doom three-piece called Ides Of Gemeni. It is not as much doom in the musical sense, as it is qua atmosphere. As I read on I think last.fm, the vocals of Sera Timms (vocals and bass, also of Black Math Horseman fame) are very 4AD-esque: think Cocteau Twins (best band ever?) and Dead Can Dance. Just over sixteen minutes, Ides Of Gemini serve up a nice full platter of doomy psychedelic rock. It’s not easy really to pigeonhole Ides Of Gemini.

There is a bit of no wave / post-punk in their sound too, think of Joyless for example. I find Ides Of Gemini a very rewarding band to listen to. It’s a bit as depressive as Joyless, but it is also beautiful and haunting, in your best Cocteau Twins tradition. The other main member of Ides Of Gemini is J. Bennett (guitar and backing vocals), according to Blabbermouth.net a music and film journalist writing for Decibel, Terrorizer, Revolver, Alternative Press and Thrasher. The complementing third member of Ides Of Gemini is Kelly Johnston: drums and backing vocals. According to the same news item on Blabbermouth, Ides Of Gemini are set to release their debut album on Neurot Recordings spring 2012.

The Disruption Writ is their debut EP, released 14th of November 2010. The four songs: Martyrium Of The Hippolyt; Slain In Spirit; The Vessel & The Stake and closing track Resurrectionists. Relistening to this album also brings Earth – but played somewhat faster – to mind.

Show again how hard it is to pigeonhole them! What is also extremely cool: they made a t-shirt (See It Here) with the exact same image I was thinking of making myself: it’s called Hanging Man and it features an upside down hanging man similar to the figure killed and hanged upside down in the awesome movie The Ninth Gate.

Watch their beautiful Martyrium of the Hippolyt video at the link below. There is also a split release with Vermapyre (Belgian, featuring Integrity’s Dwid) on Magic Bullet Records. This split 12” features Martyrium Of The Hippolyt and a new song called Constantinople. Needless to say I’m looking forward to their debut album! Consider this EP as a warmup! ....8/10.
